Question What does it mean to be a Christian?

Answer Christians, in the Biblical view, are NOT people who have life all figured out. They are not morally superior to others. Being born into a Christian family or regular church attendance doesn't automatically make you a Christian. Simply being a good person is not enough to be a Christian.

Christians are people who have swallowed their pride, recognizing that they, by nature, are in rebellion against God and need forgiveness. They receive forgiveness by placing their faith in Jesus Christ who paid the penalty for their sin by his death on the cross, and who rose again to demonstrate the power of the living God. God's Holy Spirit indwells those who trust Jesus as Savior and Lord, and enables the believer to live a life of faith that seeks to glorify God.

Question Why should a Christian join a church?

Answer The Bible consistently teaches that the Christian life is not a "lone ranger" experience but is to be lived in community with other believers. Meeting together with other believers for worship, encouragement, Bible study and prayer stimulates Christian growth. The Bible refers to the church as the assembly of believers, and not the church building. So whether you meet in a small house church or a grand cathedral is not the issue. Living in fellowship with other believers is.

Question How do I become a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church?

Answer Membership classes are offered three times a year, and are open to any who are interested in learning more about Covenant. They are required for those becoming members, even if transferring from another Presbyterian church (there are differences!). Participants study the basics of the Christian faith, the character and convictions of Covenant, and opportunities for involvement and service. Member candidates give testimony of their faith to the Session (governing board of Elders), and confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior publicly before the congregation. For further information including a schedule of the next membership classes, please contact the church office at 322-5588.
