The Rev. Dr. Kevin Starcher

Pastor | Email Pastor Kevin

I grew up around the United Methodist, Baptist, and Pentecostal churches in my hometown of Parkersburg, WV, but Christian faith did not come a vital part of my identity until college. Asked to work at a church camp the summer after my Freshman year of college, God came alive to me around camp fires, scripture and Christian community at the age of 19. It was at this Presbyterian camp that I began my formal relationship with the PC(USA). Upon college graduation, I worked full time in the Presbyterian Camp and Conference Ministry for 7.5 years at Crestfield (for Pittsburgh Presbytery) and at Highlands (for Denver Presbytery). In 2010, I was called to Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church and to Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, WV

Church Elders

In the Presbyterian Church (USA), the office of Ruling Elder is an ordered ministry bestowed upon an individual through ordination. Ruling Elders, acting together as members of the Session, have total responsibility for the life of the congregation. Under the headship of Jesus Christ and led by the Holy Spirit, they are, together with the Pastor, the spiritual leaders of the church. The Session is responsible for the conduct and mission of the church; except for those limited responsibilities pastors exercise by virtue of office.

Elders are spiritual leaders. The Book of Order stipulates they should be persons of strong faith, dedicated discipleship, and love of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Their manner of life should be a demonstration of the Christian gospel in the church and in the world. They are to lead a life in obedience to Scripture and in conformity to the historic confessional standards of the church. (G.6.0106)

Church Deacons

The ministry of compassion and service

The office of deacons was established in the early church (Acts 6:1-7), since there was a need to attend

those in need as the church grew.

The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, sincere compassion, and sound judgment should be chosen for this ministry. (The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Book of Order)

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. (Hebrews 13:16)

Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. (Philippians 2:4)

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me . . . The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least

of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’

(Matthew 25:35-36, 40)
